1-4 power scope advice needed

As some of you know I'm quite new to centre fires and would like some advice for a new scope.
I'm serously considering buying a Leopold 1.25-4x vxr for my 708 mod 7.
It's Alot of money for me and probably the top end of my budget.
Does anyone else use one for hunting?
I'd like to hear any feedback about the scope. Or other recommendations.
I only hunt thick bush so shooting anything over 100m is very unlikely.
I plan to use talley low mounts.
I have trouble with eye relief on my current nikon prostaff when shooting prone or seated because of the mod 7s short lop I assume, so I want to mount it fairly far foward and keep good eye relief wether shooting offhand or otherwise.

@SlowElliot I have a mod7 at home waiting for me to put a swaro 3-9x36 on it using exlow talleys.
My gripe with Leupolds is the variable length of eye relief between high and low power (eye box also tightens up at highest power) I'll take a pic for you to show clearance later

Take a look through a Bushnell an comparing them. Have a 1.75-4 x32 trophy? Happy with it but only use out to 50m and usually in conjunction with a torch

I have looked through a vxr 1x4 and it seemed like a good scope. The only real problem with low magnification scopes is the small objective lens reducing light gathering. It it were me I would to for a 2x7 with a normal sized objective lense as a bit more flexible overall.

I have three of them. One on my AR7.62, one on my Marlin Camp 9, and one on my AR.22LR upper. I love them for bush shooting. I shoot with the red dot on 100% of the time, adjusting the brightness down as the light fades. Auto off means I never switch mine off and the battery never runs flat. Always forget to turn my Vortex off and it's a new battery every shoot ☹️. Personally, never had an issue with lack of scope brightness with small objective. By the time it's too dark in the scope it's time to be unloading and heading for home IMHO. The 2-7 VXR is also a good option. I tend to run my 1-4 between 2-4 power, so the 2-7 on 2x is excellent as well, and it gives you a bit more reach if you should ever need it. Buy a VXR with confidence.

Mate ive always used a 3x9x40 for me bush gun but thats more because i like shooting out a bit further with them too, like 500 with the mod 7 308. If you are handy to Te Puke you could have a nosy at my set up if that helps

Lots of good advice. I'm torn between the 1.25-4 patrol and the 2-7.
Do you guys who run 1X scopes often use the lowest magnification?
I feel more excited about the patrol for some reason, but maybe the 2-7 is more practical.

Only negative with the Patrol is the exposed turrets, which in themselves are fine, but the very aggressive finish on them can knock come bark off your hand, and could be prone to rotation if you are actually 'bush bashing'. I have a Patrol and would personally stick with the standard VXR.

I never used my 1-4 or 1-6's on 1 power, so swapped out for a 2.5-10. But only use the 10 for varmint shooting and mostly keep it around 4x but i don't hunt thick bush
There's a reason why 3-9 is so popular

I had a 1-4 power on my ar15 for a while and it was a joke how useless the difference between 1 and 4 power is
and i got super sick of my suppressor taking up too much of my field of view

if its that low go fixed power
wow its a long shot id better zoom right in with 4 power?

2-8 or 2-12 leupolds are available as a substitute seeing as im poo pooing on the idea

That's a good point, I am careful with my my rifle but it is a bush basher.

Think I'll go with the vxr 2-7.
I'm sure I don't need more than 7x.
Sounds like I'm not missing anything special by not having 1x.
Still a week or 2 before I have the funds so plenty of time to change my mind yet lol.
Outdoorsupples the best place to buy?

Just some thoughts on your options. I note that in the first place you have already decided you need a scope.

Does your "bush basher" have iron sights? If you only ever shoot up to 100 m do you need magnification? Magnification comes at a cost of parallax error which is minimised by using the low iron sights (lower than the lowest ever mounted scope) something we all know from our airgun days. And iron sights snag less.

If use scope vs iron sights at different distances say 25m-100m, some of the extra precision made possible by the optic sight gets cancelled by its greater parallax error (unless you use mil-dots and remember to aim high/low depending, which is not great for fast shots).

Have had a 2x7 Burris on my .308 for years its a great compact light scope a leupy 2 x7 would be great too.

I think you might be talking about the height difference between sight line and bore line. That's different to parallax - parallax is the apparent change of your crosshairs position relative to target depending on the angle you're looking through the scope (i.e. eye not central behind the scope). It's not something you compensate with by aiming high/low.

Thanks. Yes, I should have specified that I was referring to sight above bore height. It is actually more precise to discuss parallax error as a result of different causes.

"Sight height above the bore" introduces one form of "parallax error" or parallel axis error. This form of parallax error is common to all sight types, optic and iron, and arguably the more significant one as it cannot be cancelled out by using a correct viewing angle. It can only be reduced by getting whatever sight you have as close as possible to the bore.

Parralax from viewing angle error is incidentally a non-issue with rear diopter ring iron sights.

Different story with open iron sights where viewing angle error (thus improperly aligning notch and post) introduces horizontal and/or vertical parallax error from the bore.

The only ZERO parallax free sighting method is boresighting, for close up shooting, but it is quite slow. (-:

I would be interested in hearing a good reason why SlowElliott, who presumably hunts medium sized game such as deer, goats, feral sheep etc. when bush hunting, should bother forking out for a scope given his <100m requirements?
